Reading For Autism!
By Anna Hagood

People who have autism are unique and they are always very nice. A few days ago my teacher Mrs. Delong asked me if I wanted to help her in an assignment. I asked what it was and she said that I had to read books and record my self for kids who have autism could read. People always looking at them funny but I just say to myself why would they do that those kids can’t help it. I really want go up to those people and say what if u were like that and how would you feel if people were making funny of you that way. Sometimes people just don’t know when to stop, so I singed up and that really put a smile on my face and when those kids get to hear a voice and get to read I bet it will put a smile on their face too.

(Anna became involved with helping children affected by autism by seeing her mother get involved by serving on our Board)

Steven Bailey & The Bailey Family

My husband and I are the proud parents of two children, Shelby who is 17 and Steven who is 9.  We thought we had the perfect little family and life until autism reared its ugly head when Steven was 18 months old. The educational diagnosis left us devistated and on our own to find help for his special needs. Steven began school at 3 years old in the Model Autism classroom and Home Program. Unfortunately the Home Program ended when he turned 8 years old and we found ourselves on our own to find the Speech, Social and O.T. therapies they had provided. This is when we found the Grant a Gift Foundation to help us pick up some of the pieces and provide us with direction.  They did much more than that. They provided us with moral support, letting us know we were not alone being in this position. Giving us the piece of mind knowing that Steven's needs were as important to them as he is to us. They also provided us with a Medical Diagnosis that for many years was financially out of our reach. Without a Medical Diagnosis the doors to so many programs and opportunities would be closed to him now and in the future. We are so greatful to the Grant a Gift Foundation for all the support and guidance they give to us as parents but also to our daughter who is also affected by having a sibling with Autism. I do not know where we would be without the help that the Grant a Gift Foundation has unselfishly given us!! :-)

Hi,

I am a 4 1/2 year old girl that lives with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I used to talk but have lost all of my words. With early diagnosis I have been able to get into a school program that has helped me to begin the process of learning to speak again. I don't even bite myself anymore! I am learning to "sing" and I love music, barbies and princess dolls! I hope that there will soon be more funding so that I can get the therapy I need for speech, dietary needs, behavioral therapy and occupational therapy. There are so many other children just like me that are so smart but we just can't seem to break through without help of family, friends, teachers and therapists. Please help us "find our way back" so we can function like those who are our age and begin to live a more normal life someday.

                                    Love,
                                    Aubrey

Hi,

I am a seven year old boy that lives with High Functioning Autism and ADHD.  I love Thomas the Train and Sponge Bob.  Because of my early diagnosis, treatment and friends that care for me, I have a better life.  I have a dream of being in a regular Ed classroom all day with lots of friends and when I grow up I want work at Krispy Kreme Donuts.  I hope that lots of kids like me can get the help they need to live their dreams!

Love,

Grant
